We put our own brand through the Brand Truth Method

Brand Truth Method from Method and Worth

We ask every client some uncomfortable questions about who their brand really is. What they'd refuse to do. What they'd never say. Which brand, in any sector, they quietly wish they were more like. It felt only fair to sit in the same chair ourselves.

So we ran Method & Worth through our own method, properly, as if we were the client. Here's what came out of it.

Harder than it looks from the other side

Knowing a method inside out is one thing. Turning it on yourself is another. It meant answering the same questions we ask clients, honestly, and pushing back on each other's first answers. That part is always the most useful, and it was for us too.

The first answer that comes to mind is rarely the whole truth. The method is there to get underneath it.

The Sage, first

Our primary archetype is the Sage. The Sage's whole drive is to understand something properly and tell the truth about it.

That's the job, really. Across the 7-Day Sprints we've run, the pattern barely changes. The business usually senses what's wrong already. It needs someone to name it plainly, explain why it's happening, and show what to do next.

With the heart of a Lover

A Sage on its own can go cold. Clever, correct and slightly hard to warm to.

Underneath, we found the Lover. A genuine love of brands, of craft, of the moment a customer feels something before they've read a word. Decades spent on yachts, kitchens, homes and places leave a mark. We care how things look and how they make people feel, not just whether they perform.

What that changes

We'll always explain, not just assert. You'll know why we're recommending something, and what it means for you.

We stay close. Senior people, in the detail, for the whole engagement.

We'll never flatter a brand that needs the truth, and we'll never hand over work we wouldn't be proud to see built.

And the numbers still matter. Worth is half our name. Loving the work is no excuse for not proving it.

Why we're telling you

Partly because it's good to practise what you preach. Mostly because it shows what the method is for. It didn't give us a label. It gave us a filter. Every headline, post and proposal now gets the same question: would a wise friend who genuinely cares about you say it like this?

If you're curious what your own brand would be, our free diagnostic is a good first step. Or pick up The Brand Truth Method and sit in the chair yourself.

Questions about brand archetypes

What is the Sage brand archetype?

The Sage is driven by understanding something properly and telling the truth about it. Sage brands explain, not just assert, are comfortable with nuance, and earn trust through knowledge. Overplayed, a Sage can sound academic or slow to give a straight answer, so the best ones always land on one.

What is the Lover brand archetype?

The Lover is about closeness, beauty and emotional connection. Lover brands want to be loved, not simply used, and they speak in a warmer, more sensory way. Overplayed, the Lover can tip into style over substance.

Can a brand have two archetypes?

Yes, most do, but one should lead. A primary archetype sets the character and a secondary one adds depth. Ours is a Sage first, with a Lover's heart. What a brand can't do is switch personalities from one piece of content to the next.

How do you find your brand archetype?

Look at behaviour, not aspiration. What you refuse to do, what you'd never say and how you act under pressure reveal more than the words on your website. Our Brand Truth Method works through it in five stages: Find, Frame, Feel, Fuse and Form.
